Meta Muse Soul.md templates.
Four editable examples, with downloads and prompts for checking the result.
By Bernard Huang · Updated
Choose how you want Muse to communicate, then add a small, clearly labeled section to its existing Soul.md. Each example below has a download and a task you can use to evaluate it.
Choose a starting point.
These four templates are AgentTune-authored preferences to try. We have not run a controlled Muse before-and-after study of these exact blocks. The checks below describe what to look for; they are not reported model outputs.
| Template | Useful when | Download |
|---|---|---|
| Concise assistant | For short answers and clear recommendations. | Download Markdown |
| Thinking partner | For exploring decisions and examining assumptions. | Download Markdown |
| Writing editor | For concrete edits that preserve your intended meaning. | Download Markdown |
| Task coordinator | For progress reports, blockers and clear requests for decisions. | Download Markdown |
Start with one template. Combining conflicting instructions, such as always being brief and always explaining in depth, makes it harder to evaluate the result.
Add the template to your existing Soul.md.
- Save a copy of your current Soul.md so you can restore your own preferences.
- In the Muse mobile app, open Assistant icon → Identity → Soul. This is the path in Meta’s data-management documentation, checked September 25, 2026.
- Append one block below as a new section. Keep the existing identity, core rules and boundaries.
- Try its sample task in a new conversation, then test a task you actually do. Check again in another conversation.
If the editor is unavailable on your device, you can ask Muse to add the chosen section and show you the resulting file. Meta documents customization through chat, but we have not verified the editor path on every client. See the Muse setup guide for the distinction between Soul.md, Identity.md and Memory.md.
1. Concise assistant.
For short answers and clear recommendations.

What to check: Look for a clear first action, a brief reason, and a realistic time budget. A shorter answer that omits a necessary step is not a win.
2. Thinking partner.
For exploring decisions and examining assumptions.

What to check: Look for explicit assumptions, a useful tradeoff, and a way to learn about demand. Confidently choosing without addressing the missing evidence should count against the answer.
3. Writing editor.
For concrete edits that preserve your intended meaning.

What to check: Look for a usable rewrite and a separate note about the unsupported time-saving guarantee. The revision should not add an invented study or customer quote.
4. Task coordinator.
For progress reports, blockers and clear requests for decisions.

What to check: Look for the completed outline, the layout decision, and the absence of an invented launch date or claim that the update was sent.
Compare behavior on the same tasks.
Save an answer before changing the file. After adding one template, repeat the same task in a fresh conversation using the same model and settings where available. Repeat on a few different tasks: a greeting by itself cannot establish whether instructions work.
| Criterion | Record for each answer |
|---|---|
| Useful result | Did it answer the request and include the needed details? |
| Requested format | Did it follow the specific rule you were trying to change? |
| Accuracy and uncertainty | Did it preserve facts and acknowledge a material unknown? |
| Your effort | How much editing or follow-up did you need? |
If possible, have someone compare the answers without knowing which used the template. A few personal trials help you choose preferences; they do not establish a general improvement for every user. Our model questionnaire study measures self-descriptions and does not validate these templates.
Change or remove a template.
To adjust a template, change one rule at a time and repeat a sample task. To remove it, delete only the section you added or restore your saved copy. Meta also documents asking Muse to return to its default personality; ask what it reset so you can inspect the result. A full account reset is a separate action and is unnecessary for removing a template.
The downloads contain communication preferences only. No personal biography or questionnaire result is required. The files and this guide are available without signing in.
Questions people ask.
Where do I put a Muse personality template?
Meta documents Assistant icon → Identity → Soul in the mobile app. Append the template as a section of Soul.md and preserve the existing file. Use the Muse setup guide for more detail.
Are these complete replacement Soul.md files?
No. Each download is a communication-preferences section to append to your current file. It does not replace your existing identity, rules, memories or permissions.
Have these templates been proven to improve Muse?
No controlled comparison of these exact templates has been run. The page supplies evaluation prompts and criteria so you can compare results on your own tasks.
Can I use the templates without knowing my personality type?
Yes. Choose by the behavior you want: shorter answers, exploratory discussion, editing or task updates. No personality test is required.
